Two figures in eighteenth-century dress sit either side of a small chess table, one with a hand at her chin, the other mid-thought. The board between them is painted square by square. Both chairs, the table legs and the scrolled base are modelled separately and assembled before firing, which is why the piece has depth rather than reading as a single lump of porcelain.

Above it sits an ivory pleated silk shade. Lit, the porcelain picks up the warmth and the pale rose and blue of the clothing comes forward; unlit, it is a white figure group that happens to have a lamp in it.

Care
